Summer Solstice Meet Director Guidelines

The Summer Solstice series uses  adjusted scoring system to, hopefully, even the playing field so that newcomers, youngsters, teams, families, individuals, elite runners, men, women all have an enjoyable, successful run and can, in the end match their score against all others. To do this we need your cooperation in the way that the controls are set, selected and mapped.

Please follow these guidelines as best you can with the terrain you are working on.

• Allow the full hour – even if you feel all controls can be visitied in 45 minutes.Set 28 controls – no more, no less – the handicaps have been set based on 28 controls 

• Of the 28 controls, 5-7 should be novice level, 11-14 intermediate level , 10 advanced 

• Controls that you expect to be visited first by many runners should have multiple SI boxes and flags at the site. These would be numbered 31A & 32A (3 boxes each) for the highest traffic and 33A & 34A (2 boxes each) for the next highest traffic. All novice controls. The meet director of SS#1 must coordinate with the SI manager (Eric Teutsch) to have SI boxes re-coded to provide these. For this purpose, controls 71-76 will be reserved to create duplicate controls for 33 and 34 and triple controls for 31 and 32. Please do not use 71-76 on your map. You may use 77 – 80, if needed.

• Hang the novice and intermediate controls a bit higher than usual

• On the map, identify the controls as follows : ◦ novice controls – use SI boxes #31 – 39 Append an 'A' to the end on the map ◦ intermediate controls – use SI boxes # 40 -59 Append a 'B” to the end on the map ◦ advanced controls – SI boxes #60+ leave it with no letter. ◦ For simplicity use the same number for the control number and the control code

• At 6:40 call everyone together. Briefly give instructions stressing the 1 hour time limit, the 28 - handicap as the number they should try to find in that time and that there is a penalty or bonus if they are late (2 points per minute) or early (1 point per minute)

• At 6:44 allow everyone to look at their maps and plan their routes.

• At 6:45 start the race (HPP members can look at their maps then.)
